Halloween is a lot different to when I was a kid. (I feel old even using that expression)
I remember Halloween as just a one day event – actual Halloween day – and my costumes were usually along the lines of a black sack as a cape, coal on my face and a cardboard witches hat. There was one year that I made a ghostbusters costume from cereal boxes and tinfoil which was pretty cool!. I wish I had a picture … although it’s probably likely that it was actually shit and I just can’t remember! My trick or treat bag (a normal plastic bag) was usually full of monkey nuts and fruit, and you had to dig through it for the good stuff!
Halloween goes on for weeks now! The kids had their dress up parties in school. The eldest had a dress up party in theatre. They had a kids halloween party in the local and danced the day away.
The youngest was totally confused about the actual event. When was it halloween? Was it over?
Halloween morning came and they had a party to go to at 10am.. (Nothing like the social life of a child!!!) We popped into Dunnes on the way for some bits. As we’re walking passed the closed off licence isle the eldest shouts “MAMMY IF YOU WANT BEER YOU CAN’T BUY ANY IT’S CLOSED!! Morto.
Did our trick or treating at about 6pm. Even the rhyme has changed! Mine roared at each door:
“TRICK OR TREAT, SMELL MY FEET,
GIVE ME SOMETHING NICE TO EAT,
IF YOU DON’T, I DON’T CARE,
I’LL PULL OUT YOUR UNDERWEAR”
I have to hand it to them they were super enthusiastic!
Sugar high began somewhere around 7pm. The eldest was speaking a high pitched sugary language I couldn’t understand. The youngest bounced off the walls.
The eldest chased the cat around and at one point exclaimed “Mammy you and the cat could be twins! ” I have absolutely no idea what he meant and felt it the safer option to leave it unknown…
All in all a nice Halloween. Definitely getting more fun each year as they get older.
But now it’s time to countdown to the main event. I. Can’t. Wait.
