So, in true style of getting into a show miles after everyone else, we started House Of Cards. Oh My God I love it! We both do!
I was sceptical. The fact that it’s a Political Drama made me think this wasn’t going to be for me. I’ve mentioned in my previous Netflix post how I like fun shows and don’t particularly like anything dark or overly serious.
I tend to know by the end of the first episode of a show if it’s going to be a winner and I knew after the pilot of House Of Cards.
If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the gist of it. Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) is a Democrat from South Carolina, trying to climb his way to the top of the ranks in Washington D.C., by – pretty much – any means necessary. Supported by his wife, Claire Underwood (Robin Wright), the show deals with the levels of ruthlessness, manipulation and influence used by the couple to gain political power.
Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are fantastic as a couple, and the odd thing is, despite their willingness to trample on everyone to reach the top, and despite them being a callous, cruel couple who’ll stop at nothing to get what they’re after, they’re very likeable characters, both individually and as a couple! It’s weird!
The show has everything you’d expect for a Political Drama – greed, corruption, abuse of power, ruthlessness – but it also has more than a touch of humour. Kevin Spacey’s character talks to the audience, looking directly at the camera. I thought this would be a bit off putting but it’s not, it really adds to the show and involves you. There’s moments during a scene where he’ll throw a sort of sarcastic “seriously?” look to the camera and it’s brilliant!
We’re nearing the end of Season 2 now and I can’t wait to see what happens. There’s been shocks in Season 2 for sure. It’s been a really exciting season, really captivating, and it’s definitely a “let’s just watch one more episode and see what happens” sort of show.
Here’s a look at the trailer for Season 1 if you haven’t seen it…
Let me know what you’re watching at the moment and if you’ve any recommendations! 🙂
Note: I was given a free subscription to Netflix for me to post updates on what we're watching. All views are my own.
